A note from the Chair

Tēnā koutou e te whānau whānui o Ngāti Tamaterā,
As we move deeper into autumn, we take a moment to reflect on the strength and determination of our people. The changing season reminds us of the importance of balance – between action and rest, challenge and opportunity, tradition and innovation.
This month’s pānui is full of kaupapa that shows how Ngāti Tamaterā continues to lead with purpose and unity – from our rangatahi wānanga to protecting Tīkapa Moana, from housing opportunities to celebrating iwi business success.
Ngā mihi nui to each and every one of you contributing to the well-being of our whānau, whenua, and moana. Your mahi matters. Let’s continue to uplift one another and move forward together, under the korowai of our tūpuna.
Let’s keep paddling forward together.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Antony Royal

Pou Rāhui - Te Toki Voyaging Success
A significant milestone for the Pou Rāhui kaupapa was achieved when rangatahi and iwi representatives embarked on a three-day voyage aboard Haunui, the waka hourua of Te Toki Voyaging Trust. Led by tohunga Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr and his experienced crew, the journey reconnected participants to the ancestral pathways of Tīkapa Moana, voyaging across Waitematā, resting at Motutapu, sailing around Waiheke to Tikapa Horuhoru and returning to the historic waters of Pūtiki o Kahumatamomoe.
This immersive experience revitalised the iwi connection to the moana, exercised mana motuhake, and fostered the growth of intergenerational waka leadership. Our rangatahi took the helm—both literally and spiritually—navigating the seas and the legacy of our tūpuna, navigating both the seas and the legacy of our tūpuna. Ka tuku mihi nui ki Te Toki – ka hoki anō te waka!
Strengthening Relationships
Alongside our new experiences with Te Toki Voyaging Trust, our Ngāti Tamaterā Pou Rāhui team remains committed to strengthening existing relationships with our Hauraki whanaunga, local governance & wider community as we journey together towards a better future for all.
Marine Ecosystem Restoration
Throughout March, together with MUSA Matai Moana, we continued to build the foundation for a healthier marine ecosystem with Ngāti Hei & Ngāti Paoa in our rohe moana of Ahuahu & Waiheke; supporting the restoration of their taonga species by removing thousands of kina from the well-publicized barrens of the area. The kina from Waiheke were in good condition & happily accepted by a local whanau hosting an unveiling on the island.
Building Better Partnerships
On the shores of Tapu, Waipatukahu & Te Mata, the effort made to build better partnerships as Tangatawhenua with TCDC & MPI reached a significant milestone as TCDC Parks & Reserves team confirmed that routine rāhui observation reports had been logged as part of their monthly review. To affirm their support for our rāhui, TCDC has procured their own rāhui signs which are now displayed at Tapu beach & Waipatukahu reserve.

Pou Rāhui Leads Iwi Voice at the Beehive in Fight Against Invasive Caulerpa
On Wednesday, 12 March, iwi representatives from the Pou Whakarae Governance Group leading the charge against invasive Caulerpa met Hon Andrew Hoggard, Minister for Biosecurity, kanohi ā kanohi in Wellington.
Representing the united iwi front were Laurie Beamish (Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki), Joe Davis (Ngāti Hei), Herearoha Skipper (Ngāti Pāoa), and Michelle Wilson (Ngāti Tamaterā).
The rōpū was supported by our marine scientist, Professor Kura Paul-Burke and Sarah Baddeley of Martin Jenkins Ltd. The hui followed the submission of the “Fighting Invasive Caulerpa” Business Case in December 2024, which presents a robust, iwi-led strategy to combat the spread of Caulerpa in Tīkapa Moana and beyond. Why This Hui Matters:
- Created space for the Minister to hear directly from iwi about the environmental, cultural, and economic threats posed by Caulerpa.
- Reinforced the strength of the business case, including cost-benefit analysis, mātauranga Māori, and scientific expertise.
- Highlighted the power of iwi collaboration and cross-sector partnerships to protect and restore our moana.
Acknowledging Our Collective Effort
Ngāti Tamaterā acknowledges with deep gratitude the many hands that shaped this kaupapa – iwi members, councils, scientists, mātauranga Māori experts, community and industry leaders – your contributions have made this milestone possible.

He Taonga Te Wai – Every Drop Counts!
Auckland is now officially preparing for drought. Dam levels have fallen below 60%, with March being the driest on record since 2010. The impact is being felt across our rohe – and we all have a role to play.
Ngāti Tamaterā whānau, this is a call to action. Whether you're in the city or coastal, conserving water is about protecting our taiao, our future, and each other. Even small changes – like taking shorter showers or turning off irrigation systems – help reduce the pressure on our fragile water supply.
Ka ora te wai, ka ora te whenua, ka ora te tangata.
If we care for the water, we care for the land, and we care for ourselves.
Let’s do our part – one drop at a time.
