He kōrero nā te Heamana

A note from the Chair

Tēnā koutou katoa,

We trust that you and your whānau have had a safe and restful summer break, enjoying time together and recharging for the year ahead. As we step into 2025, our team is back into the mahi with a strong focus on serving our people and continuing the kaupapa that strengthens our iwi.

We began the year with the National Iwi Chairs Forum hui at Waitangi, where iwi leaders gathered to discuss key issues impacting our people, whenua and moana. This significant wānanga sets the tone for the year ahead as we continue to advocate for our iwi and whānau.

Another major event for our people is Te Matatini o te Kāhui Maunga, a powerful celebration of our reo, tikanga, and identity through kapa haka. We acknowledge and support all our whānau who will be taking the stage, representing the depth and richness of our traditions.

We encourage our whānau and hapu to stay connected and to take full advantage of the opportunities in 2025.

Kia kaha, kia manawanui!

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

Caulerpa

Invasive Caulerpa in Tīkapa Moana and Te Moananui ā Toi

Invasive Caulerpa (Caulerpa brachypus and Caulerpa parvifolia) is an aggressive, fast-spreading seaweed that poses a major threat to the marine ecosystems of Tīkapa Moana and Te Moananui ā Toi. First detected in Aotea Great Barrier and subsequently in other areas, this invasive species blankets the seabed outcompeting native marine plants, disrupting kai moana habitats, and threatening customary and commercial fisheries.

In partnership with iwi and agencies we have completed a Better Business Case that was presented to the Government just before Christmas 2024 on proposals to strengthen the marine biosecurity response to invasive Caulerpa. This business case was backed by the Pou Rāhui iwi with support from regional council partners and peer-reviewed by independent scientific and mātauranga experts.

It was a significant collaborative process within a short space of time. This business case is now with the Government and a range of discussions are occurring. We await further discussions with both Government and Councils on taking our recommendations forward.

Our kōrero expanded to include robust discussion on how rāhui and kaitiakitanga find an empowered place - a place of mana - within overall marine management going forward.

Tohu our taiohi team are currently pursuing include: Bachelor of Science (Marine), Diploma of Professional Scuba Instruction (Level 5), PADI Open Water Scuba Diver, and Day Skipper CBE Certificate.

Enhancing Māori Engagement in Local Government

E te whānau, our momentum is strong—let’s keep it going! After the powerful uplift from the Te Kotahitanga movement, the hīkoi, and the unprecedented submissions on the Treaty Principles Bill, the next step is clear: we must vote and submit on the issues that impact us locally, for our whānau and our mokopuna. Local Elections 2025 are coming, and councils are setting their Annual Plans and Budgets—this is where decisions are made about our whenua, taiao, housing, and funding for our marae and communities. Our voices shape the future. Submit, vote, and ensure our people are heard.  The submission link to have your say for the annual budget opens Friday 28th February at noon.
